27 weeks old and it’s Halloween! I made you a little pumpkin mask for the occasion and it felt really good to be stitching something together again. Normally this kind of thing would be done in a few hours, but these days most of my time is spent on taking care of you, so it took me about two weeks to make this. I’m very happy you let me put it on for the photo.
Mama and Papa never really celebrated Halloween in their home-countries. Last year when I was pregnant with you, we decided to add some yearly traditions to our repertoire. We want to make loads of memories with you and give you several fun recurring activities to look forward to every year. I used to love traditions as a little girl, I hope you’ll enjoy them too.
So last year, we carved our first pumpkins ever and we did it again this year, with you. We carved and scooped and you sucked the rims of our pumpkins. I count that as a good first Halloween for you.
We also celebrated Guy Fawkes Night (British tradition) by attending a local bonfire and fireworks show, last year. I almost forgot about it this year (my memory is no longer what it used to be), but Papa remembered, and this year Buxton celebrated it on the same day as Halloween.
We went there with Uncle Djamo and Aunt Yasmin, just like last year, but they looked very different this year. Everyone loved their costumes and people were taking photos with Djamo and Yasmin, like they were local celebrities. You didn’t seem to find their new look scary, but you were very intrigued.
You already saw a fireworks show in Scotland a few months ago, tonight you saw your second, and it’s not even New Year’s yet! We brought your ear muffs to protect you from the loud bangs and you liked watching the pretty light explosions.
Here’s a list of things you’ve tasted this week (if I remember them all): apple, asparagus, avocado, bacon, banana, banana bread, basil, bell pepper, blueberry yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, cheddar, chicken, chives, cucumber, egg, frittata, fritter, garlic, green onion, kiwi, orange, parmesan, parsley, passionfruit yogurt, peas, pineapple, pumpkin, pork, quiche, rice, seaweed, strawberry, tomato, turkey, water, watermelon, and zucchini.
We’ve seen some interesting reactions on your face to the taste of some foods. The first thing you really tasted was pineapple (after smearing your banana over your smock), and your face made that piece of sweet yellow fruit look sour. But you still loved it, you sucked/gummed on it for a very long time.
So far, you’ve given everything at least a very quick taste. You actually seemed to chew the cauliflower and some of it got too far back in your mouth and triggered your gag reflex. The cauliflower and your last meal of mommy milk came back out.
Sometimes you aren’t very interested in the food. You are always interested in the plastic plates, though. You grab those plates out of my hand as soon as you can, and then they always end up in your mouth. No matter the tasty treats that are on the tray in front of you. The plastic plates always win in your world.
You already have some favorites. You surprised us with your eagerness for meat! You’re already a little carnivore. Something else that always gets you munching, no matter your disinterest in the rest of the food, is homemade banana bread. I never made it before this week, but I will be making that again. But your very favorite thing, even better than a plastic plate, is yogurt! Extra bonus: you get to be extra messy.
